Glenn first visited The Solomon Islands in 1998, when completing photographs for his book Pacific Island Style. Glenn’s father Adam fought the Japanese alongside Solomon Islanders defending Henderson Airfield during World War Two and going back to Honiara to photograph their Festival of the Arts was a great experience.

 

The Battle for Guadalcanal was particularly fierce and on top of the many battle casualties, the same number died of disease. Perhaps we forget that both countries suffered greatly during the war years and after, and that the families of the New Zealand men who fought there are forever connected to The Solomon Islands people in their gains and grief.
